How I Realized Immediate Impressions and Revenue Results with Google AdSense Auto Ads

I started on my blogging / online journey about two years ago. I had an idea for my 1st site straight away and brought it online in October 2016. I did intentionally and initially endeavor to monetize the site on low traffic using Google AdSense. I was fortunate because my 1st site on the 1st attempt was accepted by Google for display of Google AdSense Ads. As you can imagine the revenue was minimal because it was a fairly low volume site.  As the site has picked up followers the revenue has improved slowly and steadily thus I am particularly sensitized to any dramatic month to month shifts ad revenue.

In the spring of 2018, I pulled up my AdSense account to add new Ad Units to one of my newer sites and saw an option to turn on something called Google AdSense Auto Ads. A little backstory is in order:

When I was accepted to AdSense there was a limit on the number of AdSense Ad Units you could display on a page; it may have been no more than 3. So, you had to pay particular attention to the ‘right or best’ locations to display AdSense Ad Units on your site. The restrictions were gradually lifted but not wanting to violate any rules and get banned, I stuck to the three per page policy. [Conveniently that led me to investigate other CPM Ad networks. For those who have not yet been accepted to Google AdSense or banned you can find my list and some reviews of several Google AdSense alternatives]

Thus, I was quite curious in the spring of this year (2018) when I saw that there was a Google AdSense Auto Ad setting. That is, you could turn on Google AdSense Auto Ads for your various sites, one site, or some portion of one or many sites. Specifically, Google describes the service this way:

Auto ads are a family of ad formats that offer a simple and innovative way for you to monetize your content. With Auto ads, you place the same piece of ad code once on each page. After you’ve added the code, Google automatically shows ads at optimal times when they’re likely to perform well for you and provide a good experience for your users.

I initially ignored the notification that AdSense Auto Ads was available, not wanting to ‘mess up’ my chosen AdSense ad unit locations. Somewhere around mid-summer (2018), I got curious again and really read what Google was proposing with the use of Auto Ads.

First, it became clear that they were using their accumulated knowledge of mine and other site owner ad network participants to identify the very best area of a website to generate targeted ad response and thus generate ad revenue for the site owner. Second, there no longer appeared (and there isn’t) a restriction on the number of AdSense Ad Units per page. And third, the Google programming algorithm did not interfere with AdSense Ad Units that you’d already placed on your site and thus potentially require you to go back and find all of the different ad codes to turn off manual ad selection in lieu of the auto ads. Thus, in August 2018 I turned it (AdSense Auto Ads) on for all my sites.

Thru August and September within a week or so span I saw increased Google AdSense Ad Revenue. So, I generally knew that ad clicks were occurring at a higher rate than before. I also saw a couple day spikes in revenue from AdSense clicks. But it wasn’t until I received my September 2018 Google AdSense monthly report via email that I noticed the quantified results:

  • 35% increase in Ad Impressions
  • 31% increase in Ad revenue
  • On a lower clickthrough rate presumably due to more ad options per page

Of course, the important number for me and I suspect you is increased Ad Impressions resulting in increased Ad revenue (my highest monthly ever I might add). My confirmed experience is a net positive benefit in passive income generation, which is the whole point of my online business venture. About 2/3rds thru the month of October I refreshed my AdSense stats, this time for October and had already surpassed the record passive income generated from Google AdSense in September. I believe there’s a 2nd variable impacting the numbers for September, which I will cover in another post, but thus far Google AdSense Auto Ads has been a resounding success for me. Here’s a link to the steps to turn on Google AdSense Auto Ads on your site or alternatively you can watch my youtube video. I hope my experience helps you make a decision about Google AdSense Auto Ads in your journey to develop financial independence thru business income (passive and active) generation.

By way of update, my October Results were indeed higher than September. At the beginning of November, I turned off all Manually inserted Google Adsense Ads and went strictly with Google Adsense AutoAds. My November results are already now higher than October which represents my best month ever.
